Dearest Mommy, Parts III and IV of…?

July 12th, 2007

I just put Leif down for a nap and realized that I forgot to feed him lunch. And the other day he missed a breath while choking on a piece of apple—not a piece that he found covered in dog hair on the floor or wedged in a dark crevice of his high chair, but one that I gave him. After I administered a frantic finger-sweep maneuver (FFSM) he looked at me like, “can you say…Mommy of the Day???” Please, would some other mommy tell me it’s OK????? (Or non-mommy, that would be helpful too.)

And now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go steam the organic vegetables I bought for Leif while forgetting to feed him his lunch…

There, there, now….::patting on back:: It’s ok! You’re a good mommy. There will be plenty of times when you forget to feed yourself lunch as a result of your child. You’re just paying him back ahead of time….

That might not have made you feel better. Here’s my second shot: I once gave my then-6 month old a minute slice of hot dog and ended up having to rip her from the confines of her highchair, turn her upside down and give her the Heimlich.

    PS-You are a good mommy! :)

Ah yes…I too have forgotten to give Brady lunch or dinner when he was Leif’s age. But the thought that food at that age is just supplementary made me not feel like such a horrible mommy.

Now, as for choking hazards….I think I get the Mommy of the Year award, as two days ago I believe Brady may have swallowed a sliver of mirror. Yeah, glass. I expect Child Services to show up at any moment!

I had a child development specialist tell me once that there is a real difference between a gag reflex (which is a normal part of the learning-to-eat process) and actually choking (turning blue.) So, as long as he stays a healthy shade of pink, consider yourself a facilitator of knowledge! :)
