I just added a bunch of old stuff that should’ve been blogged a long time ago but I was too lazy:

Sorry for adding all that at once. Feel free to check back in 2007 for my next entry!

A Grand Day Out

June 10th, 2006

On a whim, I went hiking with Pam and Bjorn and Marley and Sam. We went to Overlook Mountain in the Southeastern Catskills.

Bjorn raced Marley. Marley won.

The Catskills were a destination for rich people to escape NYC beginning in the 1820’s after the invention of the steam ship. ("You would make a ship sail against the winds and currents by lighting a bonfire under her deck…I have no time for such nonsense." - Napoleon) One of the most fameous of these resorts was the Overlook Mountain House. It burned twice and the reconstruction of the third incarnation was finally abandoned in 1928 in the beginning of the depression.

Don’t jump, Bjorn!

The Overlook Mountain Fire Tower.

We climbed the fire tower and the ranger opened the cab to let us in. It was a beautiful day to look out over the Catskills. The ruins of the Overlook Mountain house could be seen.

A small sliver of Echo Lake can be seen just to the left of center in this image.

Looking down, we saw Sam start to roll in the grass out of complete happiness from being out of our apartment and off leash.

Marley attacked her.

A massive game of chase ensued.

The lake is Ashoken Reservoir.

The Hudson River.

Normally afraid of climbing, Sam started to come up the fire tower stairs.

She was pretty scared going down, though.

Our AmerIclandic Explorers.

We hiked around to a different view over a 50 foot cliff.

We hiked down to have lunch at Echo Lake, the only natural lake in a Catskill wilderness area.

It was really windy when we got back to the top of the ridge.

Overall, we drove 250 miles and hiked 9. It was a great excursion.

Elise Friderich is 2 years old. The Friderichs had a "Little Devil" party for her since her birthday is on such a "special" day!

We celebrated at Chuck E. Cheese. While the party was for the kids, there were some "adults" looking a little scary too.

Elise points to that crazy mouse that’s moving! "Did you see that?"

"I’m not sure whether I should be amazed or scared."
